The sodium hypochlorite formula, also known as liquid bleach formula or antiformin formula, is explained in this article. This ionic compound consists of cation, a sodium metal (Na +) bound to an ion, hypochlorite (ClO–). The chemical or molecular formula of sodium hypochlorite is NaClO.

It is a colorless to slightly yellow watery liquid that smells like household bleach. It dissolves in water. The compound was created in 1789 by Claude Louis Bertholet of France. This compound was obtained by passing chlorine gas through a potash lye solution. It can be synthesized industrially by hooker process. In this process dilute sodium hydroxide is made to react with chlorine gas, to produce NaClO plus sodium chloride plus water.

Uses and application

Bleaching

Household bleach is usually a solution containing 3-8% sodium hypochlorite and 0.01-0.05% sodium hydroxide by weight; Sodium hydroxide is used to slow the breakdown of sodium hypochlorite into sodium chloride and sodium chlorate.

Cleaning

Sodium hypochlorite has certain properties. In other applications, it can be used to remove mold stains, dental stains due to fluorosis and stains on crockery, especially stains caused by tannins in tea. It is also used as a laundry detergent and surface cleaner

It is due to bleaching, cleaning, deodorizing and caustic effects due to oxidation and hydrolysis (saponification). Organic dirt exposed to hypochlorite becomes water soluble and volatile, which reduces its odor and facilitates its removal.

Deodorizing

Sodium hypochlorite goose deodorizing properties, which go hand in hand with its cleansing properties.

Water treatment

Sodium hypochlorite solution is used to treat dilute cyanide wastewater such as electroplating waste. In batch treatment operations, sodium hypochlorite is used to treat more concentrated cyanide waste, such as silver cyanide plating solutions. Toxic cyanide is oxidized in cyanate (OCN−) which is not toxic, ideally as follows:

CN− + OCl− → OCN− + Cl−

Sodium hypochlorite is commonly used as a bioside in industrial applications to control slime and bacterial formation in aquatic systems used in power plants, pulp and paper mills etc., usually in 10-15% weight solutions.

Is sodium hypochlorite the same as bleach?

Sodium hypochlorite is a solid white powder, but water soluble powder is more widely used. Sodium hypochlorite solution is commonly called bleach, although household bleach also contains small amounts of many other compounds, including sodium hydroxide and calcium hypochlorite.

Is sodium hypochlorite harmful to humans?

Abdominal pain, bloating, cough, nausea, sore throat, and vomiting after sodium hypochlorite are ingested. Sodium hypochlorite causes redness and discomfort on the skin or hair. The skin may become responsive after prolonged exposure. Sodium hypochlorite is toxic to animals that use water.
